2016 Strongholds

Hearts beat fast during the first 15 second autonomous period where the humans pre -program the robots to perform without a person controlling the robot. The second period, known as the teleoperated period, runs for 2 minutes and 15 seconds. During this time, drivers take control of the robots and attempt to score points through making goals with boulders, breaching defenses, and by challenging and/or climbing towers at the end of each match.

There are five total defenses protecting each alliance’s courtyard and tower. Robots are designed to navigate through various defenses. The goal of these defenses is to hinder and prevent the opponent’s ability to score points. The low bar defense is permanent and present during every match. Each alliance chooses three other defenses and the last defense is decided through audience participation. Some of the defenses include Sally Ports, moats, drawbridges, and rough terrain.

The overall goal of each alliance is to throw boulders into goals to weaken the tower, cross defenses, surround and climb the tower to earn as many points possible during the match. Teams can earn two ranking points when they win a match; one each time they tie a match, capture their opponent’s tower, or breach defenses. These points determine the team’s rank and potential for proceeding into the finals.
